DINER RECEIPT
RECEIPT NUMBER: CTA05
RECEIPT DATE: 9 29 19XX
MANAGER TITLE: TRUSTED ASSOCIATE
RECEIPT NOTES:
I suppose this will make our newest employee’s work rather easy, no? The answer was in front of us all along. But if mon “nouvel” ami already knew the source of our blinking neon lights… why go through the trouble of hiring Secret to investigate? I’d like to think it wasn’t just a poor attempt to cover his tracks but rather a roundabout loophole in his own mind—a way to bring Secret in ahead of his “schedule.” I’ll take it. Another set of hands is always welcome, no?
Secret is, of course, still out on his clandestine mission to gather information about our missing Bird. But now that we know part of the source, Secret’s mission has shifted. He’s to find out who else might be aware of our Cafe’s trade secret. If he finds more leaks in our operation… well, it’s not exactly his job to patch them, is it? We’d need a coffee expert for that, and unfortunately, according to Baltimore, that expert is still making his way through elementary school. Not that we can’t manage to brew a little coffee ourselves in the meantime.
As I’ve recently learned, Baltimore considers only Secret “hirable” out of my current three picks—whom I’ve already scheduled meetings with. But it would be senseless to cancel now, wouldn’t it? Who knows? Perhaps mon nouvel ami will see something new and exciting in them that makes them worth hiring, even if they don’t quite fit his picture of what the Cafe and Diner was—or, rather, will be. Our next meeting with Madeline Saturn is on the 15th, and while he’s tried to duck out of it, claiming he already knows who he wants to hire—I’d say he owes me at least this much after all that subterfuge, no?
