How can we help Mr. Odom? I’ve been racking my brain all day, trying to figure out how to get him to see he was more than just his failures. I thought about giving him the No. 0 spiel about "half-successes," but let’s be honest—that kind of fluffy nonsense isn’t going to work on Mr. Odom. Then I considered showing him how he’s regarded as a Founding Father… but a little more research made me realize that’s more of a misclassification. Not every guy who was around back then gets to be called a Founding Father, and that would probably just bum him out more.
Mr. Odom’s a tough guy. He was well-liked, a good lawyer, mostly a patriot, and he even gave us an Amendment! …Though, I doubt he’d see that as a win. The closest he ever got to achieving his real goals led to a rule specifically designed so no one could ever do that again. Ouch.
I just don’t know what we could do to help him see that he’s not… completely forgotten by history. If only there was some way to show him that the world was wide enough for Hamilton and him...
Wait. WAIT. That might actually work!
Okay, I know I’ve been a bit of an annoying theater kid lately with the Hamilton stuff, but… what if we showed Mr. Odom Hamilton? Maybe if he sees some of his own complexity played out on stage, he’ll realize he doesn’t need to haunt One if by Land, Two if by Sea, drinking himself to double-death. He’d see that people do remember him—and that he gets to sing the best song in the whole show!
I’m going to try it. It can’t be worse than doing nothing, right?
