Allison pulled me aside. Not far. Just far enough to whisper, and just close enough for everyone to notice. She looked at me like she’d seen a ghost, but one she wasn’t afraid of. She wasn’t scared, but there was a glint of recognition in her eyes. I wonder… Did she know my mother? ███████? Well, whether she did or didn’t know her, this is what she said to me:
“You’re the █████.”
No elaboration. No inflection. Like that word alone should explain everything. It… didn’t. Kyle told me that ██████ are ███████████ or █████ meant for ████████ in botany. Daichi hissed that it also just means a █████████████████████. Which, I suppose I am. I tried to ask what she meant. Allison only smiled, quiet and smug, and told me to ask the trees and the hills.
So I did.
Or, I tried to. I pressed my hand against the bark of the ████████, and it felt like breath under my palm. Warm. Pulsing. Changing. The bark rippled around my fingertips like ink in water, shaping itself to the curl of my hand. I think it’s reacting to the mark on my arm. I think it knows me. Or, well, it knows my mark. Not me.
I don’t know what it means yet. The way the Otherworld seems to react to my mark. The way it yields to it. Allison didn’t give me answers. Just riddles. I guess I should have expected that. But it still stung. She knew more than she let on. She wanted me to be uncertain. ███████ like her, they thrive on imbalance, at least according to Rico and Icky. They like to tip the scale before you know you're even standing on one.
But I’m not giving up. Our next step is to meet with Ériu at the center of Tír Glas. She’s a Goddess. But maybe also a guide. If anything, I just hope she’s more forthcoming. I hope she sees me for what I am. Or… maybe that she sees me for more than just my blood. Because I’m starting to worry all that matters to anyone now is who I came from. Not who I am.
