I don’t believe the Manager should be our “leader.” A manager is not the head of a company—nor should our Manager be the head of our Cafe. He does not have the proper temperament nor the correct qualities of a Cafe’s leader. A Cafe’s leader must hold a sense of unwavering optimism, an uncanny foresight for any and all unforeseen alternatives, and a willingness to do hard work when hard work is needed. No offense, Manager, but you do not fit this bill. And to some extent, I worry none of us are quite qualified.

Historically, the prior two Cafe and Diners were headed by a figure referred to as “8.” It is a specific title worth more than just the number stated. The original Owner of the First Cafe and Diner was a “true” 8. He held all of what is “8” with him until his death. At which point he had his 8 split into 8 equal pieces given to his closest allies to continue the Cafe in his absence. Then, 4/8th came together in the form of the new “8” who led the Second Cafe. Half an 8 was more than enough to run things properly.

Of course, Payroll was given an 1/8th as well—which she then split amongst us, giving us each 1/24th. 1/24th is nowhere near as desirable as 1/2th. But perhaps we can work together as a joint leader with guidance from Payroll. 1/8th surely must be enough, as the original Owner intended each 1/8th to potentially lead their own Cafes. I realize compromise is not what the Manager is seeking—but it may be our only way forward. I don’t necessarily see turning every action of the Cafe into a “vote” as a productive means of working together. Perhaps if we had more employees—but even then, the Cafes of the past have rarely been a democratic affair.

That’s all.

Big Guy.
