Avalon
SAGA01 - No. 7
Geography
One of the four cardinal planes of the Otherworld, Avalon is often regarded as the calmest of the Otherworld Planes. In its appearance, it resembles the British Isles, albeit in a rather fantastical sense. Everything in Avalon is beautiful, serene, perfect, and enchanting. The most common feature of Avalon is its boundless fields of glistening apple trees of all varieties. The central area of Avalon is known as the Emain Ablach. This area of Avalon reflects Arthurian mythology and is dotted with pristine castles, charming hamlets, and mysterious forests filled with, of course, apples.
Though Avalon is also home to many sub-regions in the form of independent isles, such as the Mag Cíuin, the Tír fo Thuinn, the Mag Mell, the Mag Findargat, and the Mag Ildathach. The Mag Cíuin, better known as the calm or gentle plain, is a peaceful woodland full of anthropomorphic creatures known as the Critterfolk. Bordering the Mag Cíuin is the Mag Ildathach, also known as the multicolored plain or Wonderland. While the nonsensical Wonderland isn’t the only feature of the Mag Ildathach, it does comprise a large portion of the multicolored plains though it shares its domain with parts of Neverland as well. Between and underneath the isles of Avalon is the Tír fo Thuinn also known as the land under the waves. It isn’t exactly clear what myths lie beneath the waves of Avalon, as the Cafe and Diner have yet to have a reason to venture there. There are also the Mag Mell and Mag Findargat, the plains of delight and silver-white. It is presumed these plains are home to the Faefolk of Avalon, who flutter about causing mischief around Avalon.
Mythology
Avalon draws primarily from Celtic and Welsh mythology. However, it does seem to dip into other notable British fantasy, such as Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland, Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows, A. A. Milne’s Winne-the-Pooh, and J.M. Barrie’s Neverland. It can be assumed that Avalon is the plane of all myth, legend, and fantasy tied to the British Isles.
Rulers
Avalon is ruled by the great trio of phantom queens, the Morrígan, with the grand witch Morgan le Fay at their side. It’s unclear when or how Avalon came under the rule of the Morrígan and Morgan le Fay, though there is much to suggest Avalon was once ruled by Arawn or King Arthur. Though both Morgan le Fey and the Morrígan can be seen in a negative light in some myths and legends, they are benevolent rulers of Avalon and have led to a continuous peace between the various isles and their inhabitants.
