Everdark
SCORP01 - No. 53
The Everdark is an enigmatic realm inhabited by Shadowfolk, Shades and various umbral entities known as “pit dwellers.” It lies beneath the Necropolis of the Amaymon, though it has resurfaced quite a bit in recent years. While one might think that the Everdark is merely a subregion of Amaymon, it has actually been described as something much older than even the Otherside itself. And therein lies the mystery of the Everdark and its Sableblooded society.
History
The Amaymon, later known simply as the Necropolis, itself is quite mysterious in its origins. The Amaymon is said to exist at the very bottom of the infinite sea of Mayda in the darkest deepest reaches of the Otherside. Though, if the Shadowfolk are to be believed before there was the Amaymon, there was only the Everdark. Though, even the name “Everdark” is a demonic construct. Before there were demons, it was simply known as Is. And to many Shadowfolk, it still is, Is. For a while, it is presumed the demons of the Necropolis lived together with the Shadowfolk of Is. As the Necropolis grew, it overtook what was Is until it sunk deeper and deeper into the eternal abyss.
Eventually, the few remaining pockets of Is came to be known as the Everdark Pits, often shortened to simply Everdark. And the Shadowfolk who remained grew exceptionally spiteful to the demons of the Necropolis and all that it stands for. Opposition to Asmodeus would later rise in the form of the Morbid King. The Morbid King would wage war against the Necropolis and its demons, eventually shifting the tides of battle by opening the Achegloom and slaying Asmodeus. Though, for the time being, the Necropolis still stands. Now under the control of Black Queen Cole (we just call her Nikki, though.)
Inhabitants & Ruler
The Everdark is undoubtedly controlled by the mighty Shadow, the Morbid King. Very little is known about this Morbid King, as the Cafe and Diner continue to try and stay the hell out of this conflict.
The Morbid King’s subject and soldiers would be the Shadowfolk, also known as the Sableblooded. As you can probably guess, their unique blood defines the Shadowfolk. On a scientific level, it is very comparable to Demonic black blood. Though Sableblood does offer two unique qualities. Those with Sableblood can enter into an incorporeal state somewhere between the physical and astral planes. And, Sableblood can “overtake” someone else’s blood, effectively turning them into a Shadow. The process of how Sableblood can turn non-Shadowfolk into Shadowfolk remains a mystery. However, it is known that the Hatman, Umbra, was at one point a human who became a Shadow through this unknown process.
Not all Shadowfolk are the same, either. Of the known varieties, there are Shadows, Shades, Pit Dwellers, Tulpas, Fear Eaters, and Miasmas. Shadows are the most recognizable variety of Sableblood as they are generally humanoid entities that can enter into a shadow-like state. Shades are another widespread variety of Sableblood, though they lack any corporeal form and must utilize inanimate objects. Pit Dwellers seem analogous to Cryptids in that they are more animalistic. Tulpas are similar to Shades, though instead of inanimate objects, they require memories and emotions to exist. Fear Eaters seem to only reside in the astral plane sustaining off of fears and nightmares. Finally, there are “Miasmas,” which are essentially Sablebloods that are constantly between a corporal and incorporeal form.
